Paula & Dave Take a Trip
Excursion
to Oakland!
Six beautiful days in March. Paula and Dave hit the
road Thursday February 28, for a leisurely trip to Oakland
via Cambria on the Central Coast, Monterey and San Jose.
Friday night, Saturday and Sunday in Oakland with Dedra,
Christa, (and Dedra's pal Suzanne who was in town for
the weekend), Patricia, John and, of course, Nathan
at 3 1/2 weeks.
A
great first night at Cambria's Fogcatcher Inn. Clear
skies, a bed by the fire and the rush of the surf through
the window. So nice that we book it for the return trip
allowing lots of time for grazing at all the local craft
shops, yikes! A breathtaking drive up the coast on a
sunny, cool, breezy Friday with lunch at our favorite
bistro in Monterey, the Tinnery -- dinner there sixteen
years ago on our first trip together, and several times
since. A dash through artichoke country to San Jose,
the East Bay and Oakland.
Friday
night, Saturday and Sunday, lots of visiting, Dedra's
birthday, lasagna at Dedra and Christa's, hiking at
the reservoir, dinner at Lalime's (yummm), breakfast
on the veranda, a trip to the steam trains -- a ride
too, tons of pizza at John and Patricia's, and -- lots
of Nathan cuddling!
And,
Guess What!? We'll be making another trip
in October, because ... Dedra's expecting too!!
2002 will be the year of the grandchild! Is that in
the Chinese calendar, ya s'pose?
Monday
morning back down the freeway with a quick stop in Gilroy
to stock up on fruit, munchies and ice, then a dash
down 101 to Paso Robles and Cambria just in time for
lunch and -- shopping! Scrumptious dinner at the Sea
Chest and another night by the fire under the down with
the surf lapping in the background, then Tuesday morning
a light breakfast, a walk along the coast and -- shopping!
Finally, and reluctantly, by mid-day it was adios
Cambria, ola Interstate and five hours through
San Louis Obispo, Santa Barbara and -- aaarrgh -- Los
Angeles (saved by the carpool lane!). A quick bite in
San Juan Capistrano then on to Ramona. 1,250 miles in
the "White Tiger" at about 20 miles to the
gallon, not too bad for a gas guzzling SUV.
