Links for more on "The Movies!"

Along with each movie, you'll find a link to that film's page on our favorite movie web site, the Internet Movie Database. There you can learn everything you could want to know about the movie's production, plus reviews from publications around the world, movie trivia, and the thoughts of ordinary couch potatoes just like us. Also one of our favorite sources for reviews, trailers and official sites is Rotten Tomatoes -- check it out, you'll see. And, of course, at both sites you'll find links to places where you can buy or rent -- yep, you can rent flicks on the 'net -- the movies of your choice. Again, no percentage for us, but that's another story.

Review: Douglas, a psychologist, develops more than passing interest in a crime when his daughter is abducted by the miscreants and the key to her release is held by a seriously disturbed delinquent..
Video:
Pretty good.
Sound: Nicely done suspense score and effects.
Dave & Paula say: Pretty formulaic with some good moments and a good supporting cast. When it's all over, not very original. Been there, seen that.

Review: Gathering of the usual suspects at the Gosford Park mansion leads to a classic whodunit murder mystery a la Agatha Christie
Video:
First rate
Sound:
Fine; low key in keeping with the setting
Dave & Paula say: Wonderful ensemble piece with a great cast of characters and an intelligent script. Lots of detail, nice comic touches; worth more than one, or even two, viewings.

Review: Tolkien's mystical tale of heroes, wizards, villains and gods as the Baggins boy seeks to return "the ring" to its place of origin to be destroyed and therefore, save the world. Many adventures, battles, fantastic encounters and haunting locales.
Video:
Fabulous.
Sound: Ditto.
Dave & Paula say: Rousing rendition of the classic tale with lots of eye-popping and jaw-dropping scenes, but hey, way long. Plan to take an intermission to allow your cheeks to wake up. A "prequel" to the next installment.

Review: Teenage girl (Sobieski) and young brother, orphaned when their parents die in a mysterious auto wreck, go to live with friends whose motives turn ugly before long.
Video:
Typical DVD
Sound: Good creepy score.
Dave & Paula say: OK, if predictable, saga of kids trapped in a remote manse by scheming adults whose nefarious plans bode ill for their survival. And, of course, everyone seems to have abandoned them or are not to be trusted. Yikes!

Review: Classic tale of the Three Musketeers. You know the story.
Video:
OK, but "reality" lighting makes interiors murky.
Sound: Period action stuff, great low-end.
Dave & Paula say: D'Artagnon meets Jackie Chan. Muddled version of the Dumas tale made for contemporary action adventure audiences who pant for Hong Kong style martial arts choreography, i.e., flying combatants and multiple player set pieces.

Review: Ex-con plans and executes a super high-tech heist of Vegas bad guy's loot with help from an eclectic cast of super criminals.
Video:
Fine DVD.
Sound: Clear, good effects.
Dave and Paula say: Great cast, fun technical setup and execution, nice comic touches, good DVD execution, all together a nice evening in the home theater.

Review: Grizzled CIA grunt (Redford) and young protégé (Pitt) get in too deep in Chinese caper with Redford playing the cagey headquarters insider keeping the Bureau creeps at bay.
Video:
Outstanding.
Sound:
Dynamic
Dave & Paula say: OK spy job with some good moments, but not up to expectations. Still, another good popcorn 'n' soda flick.

Review: Husband of hotshot lawyer (Judd) is accused of mass murder while on duty in the Marines long before their marriage. She hires has-been military law dude (Freeman) to help prove hubby's innocence with typical Judd-Freeman consequences.
Video: Pretty good DVD quality.
Sound: Good thriller stuff.
Dave & Paula say: Strictly routine murder-lawyer-mystery yarn with a script that's predictable and generally stretches credulity. Nevertheless, good with a bowl of popcorn and some Junior Mints.
